Black sliding doors across Gwent
The right door depends on the opening, the room and the way you use the garden. Here is how black sliding doors tend to work out in practice:
Where the rest of a Gwent home has white windows, a black sliding door on the rear extension can work well, provided the extension reads as a separate, modern addition.
Want black frames on your Gwent home but worried about upkeep? The textured sandtex finish is a sensible middle ground, since it hides marks far better than smooth black.
- Powder coating bonds the black colour to the metal with heat, so the frame does not need repainting, only washing with mild soapy water a few times a year.
- Signal black RAL 9004 is a fraction softer than jet black, which can suit homes with warmer stone or brick where a pure black would look harsh.
- Jet black RAL 9005 gives a crisp, deep contrast against white render or pale brick, turning the door into a strong graphic element on the elevation.

Daylight and glass in Gwent
In Gwent the shortest day has roughly 7 h 48 min of daylight and the longest about 16 h 40 min. The noon sun sits near 15° above the horizon in winter and 62° in summer — so glass that faces south collects useful warmth from October to March, while a west-facing door may need solar control to stop it overheating in July.

What is a sandtex finish?
Sandtex is a common trade name for a fine-textured powder-coat finish with a slightly sandy feel. It is popular on black frames because the texture breaks up reflections and disguises fingerprints, small scratches and water marks that would stand out on smooth black. It is applied and cured the same way as other powder coatings.
Will black frames make my room feel darker?
Black frames do not reduce the glass area, so they let in the same daylight as the same door in white. What changes is the look: a dark outline frames the view more strongly, which can feel enclosing in a small room. A dual colour frame, black outside and lighter inside, is a common way to avoid that.
Can I have black sliding doors in uPVC?
Yes, uPVC sliding doors can be supplied in black, usually as a foil laminated to the white uPVC profile. Dark foils on uPVC expand more in strong sun than aluminium, and the look and texture differ from powder-coated aluminium. Our uPVC sliding doors page explains the colours available on that material.
