What external pocket sliding doors offer homes in Belfast
The right door depends on the opening, the room and the way you use the garden. Here is how external pocket sliding doors tend to work out in practice:
If the wall beside your Belfast patio opening is free of windows, radiators and sockets, it may be long enough to take a pocket so the panels disappear completely.
Want the whole width of your Belfast kitchen open to the garden but prefer the look of sliders to bifolds? A pocket gives you both, at the cost of more building work.
- Pockets can be formed on one side or both, so a wide opening can part in the middle with panels sliding away in each direction.
- A lined and drained pocket carries rainwater running along the track out of the wall, protecting the structure as well as the rollers.
- With every panel slid into the wall, the full width of the opening is clear, so the room and terrace join without a fixed panel in the way.
How much sun will a door in Belfast get?
Daylight in Belfast runs from about 7 h 15 min in December to 17 h 17 min in June, with the noon sun at roughly 12° and 59° respectively. Use that to choose your glass: standard low-E double glazing for north and east elevations, and consider solar-control or triple glazing for sunny south and west walls.

From survey to fitted door in Belfast
Here is the usual sequence in Belfast: guide price, free survey, written quote, any building work, then manufacture (typically 6–8 weeks from survey sign-off). Fitting typically takes 3–5 days of building work to form the opening and pocket, then 1–2 days to fit the door. Nearby, we also survey in Newtownabbey, Holywood and Lisburn. Belfast is in an area we cover by arrangement: the survey is still free, and survey dates, delivery and any travel cost for delivery and fitting are confirmed in your quote before you order.
Do you need approval in Belfast?
Opening up a wall in Northern Ireland needs district council building control approval and structural calculations. We take on this work in Northern Ireland by arrangement.
Choosing the specification
- Threshold. Low or flush thresholds, with the external drainage channel continuing past the pocket.
- Pocket side. A single pocket to one side, or pockets on both sides so a wide door parts in the middle.
- Colours. Single or dual colour powder coating, so the exposed edge of the panel matches the frame inside and out.
Questions about external pocket sliding doors in Belfast
Is the price different in Belfast?
The door price is the same as anywhere else. Because Belfast is covered by arrangement, any travel cost for delivery and fitting is shown in your quote before you order; the survey itself is free.
How much wall do I need for an external pocket door?
An external pocket door needs a clear length of wall beside the opening at least as long as the panels that slide into it, plus a little for the frame. For a single 2 m panel that means just over 2 m of wall with no windows, radiators, sockets or pipes in it. A two-sided pocket splits the panels between both sides, so each side needs less length.
How wide can an external pocket sliding door be?
An external pocket sliding door in our range typically gives a clear opening of about 1.8 m to 6 m, using one panel at the narrow end and two or three panels on wider doors. Wider openings usually use pockets on both sides, or a multi-track pocket so the panels stack inside the wall. Sizes are confirmed after survey and the engineer's design.
How do you maintain rollers inside a wall pocket?
You maintain pocket door rollers through the access panel built into the inside of the pocket wall, which lets the track be vacuumed and the rollers adjusted without opening up the wall. Keep the outside drainage channel clear so water cannot back up into the pocket, and run the panels fully in and out now and then. If a panel starts to rub inside the pocket, a small roller height adjustment through the access panel usually cures it.
