Sliding door replacement across Oxfordshire

A few practical points decide whether replacement sliding doors suit a particular room and opening:

Selling a house in Oxfordshire in the next few years? Keep the competent person scheme certificate or Building Control notice for the new door with your property paperwork.

If your Oxfordshire home still has its original sliding patio door, look at the glass beads: if they are on the outside, a replacement will close off that weakness.

  • Multipoint locks, anti-lift devices and internally beaded glass close the security gaps that older patio doors commonly have, such as panels that can be lifted out.
  • New rollers and a precision track make a heavy door glide with a light push, where an old door may need both hands and a firm shove to open.
  • Removal and disposal of your old patio door is included in our guide prices, so there is no separate skip or tip run to organise.

Guide prices are the same across Oxfordshire: the fitted price depends on the size, system and specification, not your postcode. These figures are for a standard 2.1 m high door, fitted, including VAT and removal of an old door of similar size.

Daylight and glass in Oxfordshire

June 62°Dec 15°

Because Oxfordshire sees long summer days (about 16 h 41 min) and short winter ones (about 7 h 47 min), the elevation your door faces makes a real difference. With the midday sun at about 15° in winter, a south-facing door brings light well into the room; a west-facing door catches hot late-afternoon sun in summer.

Towns we cover in Oxfordshire

Approvals in England

English Building Regulations treat a new or replacement external door in an existing home as a controlled fitting: it needs a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better (or Doorset Energy Rating band C) if more than 60% of it is glazed (Approved Document L), and safety glass in a critical location (Approved Document K). Compliance is arranged through a competent person scheme installer or a Building Control notification, so you get a certificate for your records.

Questions about replacement sliding doors in Oxfordshire

Can you match other doors and windows in my Oxfordshire home?

Usually, yes. Most aluminium and uPVC systems come in standard RAL colours and finishes, and we can quote dual colour where the inside and outside need to differ. Bring photos of existing frames to the survey.

What if there is no proper lintel above my old door?

Occasionally an old door frame turns out to be carrying some load because the support above the opening is inadequate or missing. We check the head of the opening at survey and again when the old frame comes out. If extra support is needed, we explain why, what it involves and what it costs before any further work goes ahead.

Will the new door have a lower threshold?

A lower threshold may be possible on a replacement, depending on the floor level inside, the height of the patio or ground outside and how the opening was built. Low thresholds are typically 15–25 mm. A flush threshold needs a drainage channel outside so rain cannot run in. We check levels at survey and tell you what is realistic.

Can I get a bigger door in the same opening?

You can usually get more glass in the same opening, because modern frames are slimmer, but the overall door size stays roughly the same as the old one. Making the door wider or taller means widening the opening, which is structural work with a steel beam, calculations and a Building Regulations application. Our new openings page covers that.
