Triple glazed sliding doors

Sliding doors with three panes of glass for lower heat loss, quieter rooms and warmer glass on cold days. Guide prices from £3,695 inc VAT.

What are triple glazed sliding doors?

A triple glazed sliding door uses sealed glass units made of three panes rather than two, separated by two gas-filled cavities. The extra pane and cavity slow the flow of heat through the glass, which is where most heat escapes from a large glazed door. Typical whole-door U-values for triple glazed aluminium sliders are around 0.8–1.1 W/m²K, compared with around 1.2–1.6 W/m²K for a good double glazed equivalent, depending on the system, the glass coatings and the panel sizes.

That extra performance comes with weight and depth. A triple glazed unit is typically a third to a half heavier than a double glazed one of the same size, and noticeably thicker, so the frame has to be designed to hold the deeper unit and the rollers must be rated for the heavier panel. Not every sliding system can take triple glazing, and some reduce the maximum panel size when it is specified. We confirm what is possible for your opening at survey.

Triple glazing tends to be most worthwhile on north- or east-facing elevations, exposed sites, low-energy and heat pump homes, very large glass areas and houses beside busy roads. On a sheltered south-facing elevation the gain is smaller, because the extra pane also lets in a little less free winter sunshine. Our glass options guide compares the choices.

Who are they for?

Best suited to

  • North- and east-facing elevations
  • Low-energy and heat pump homes
  • Very large areas of glass
  • Homes beside busy roads

Worth considering

  • Triple glazed panels are heavier, so some systems limit the panel size or need heavier-duty rollers.
  • The extra pane lets in slightly less daylight and free solar heat than double glazing.
  • On cold, clear mornings the outside pane can mist with condensation because so little heat escapes to warm it.

Why choose triple glazed sliding doors?

  • A second gas-filled cavity cuts heat loss through the glass, giving typical whole-door U-values of around 0.8–1.1 W/m²K, depending on the system and specification.
  • The inner pane stays closer to room temperature in winter, so sitting next to a large sliding door feels less chilly and there is less cold draught falling off the glass.
  • Warmer inner glass makes condensation on the room side less likely, which helps protect window boards, blinds and flooring near the door.
  • Three panes and two cavities generally reduce outside noise more than standard double glazing, which can make a noticeable difference next to a road or railway.
  • In homes heated by a heat pump or underfloor heating, which run at lower temperatures, reducing heat loss through a large door helps the system keep the room comfortable.
  • Triple glazed doors typically come in well under the 1.4 W/m²K limit that Approved Document L sets in England for a new or replacement door in an existing home with more than 60% glazing.
  • Laminated safety glass can be used as the inner or outer pane of a triple glazed unit, adding security and sound reduction without changing the look of the door.
  • Solar-control or low-iron glass can be combined with triple glazing, so you can tune the unit for an overheating west-facing room or for maximum clarity.

How much do triple glazed sliding doors cost?

Triple glazing typically adds around 12% to a guide price; for comparison, a double glazed 2.4 m two-panel aluminium door is £4,295–£5,295, fitted, inc VAT at standard 2.1 m height, and your written quote after survey fixes the final figure.

Options and extras

  • Acoustic laminated pane. A laminated pane with a sound-dampening interlayer for doors facing a road or railway.
  • Solar-control coating. A coating that limits summer heat gain on west- and south-facing elevations.
  • Warm edge spacer bars. Insulating spacers around the unit edge that reduce cold spots and edge condensation.
  • Low-iron outer pane. Extra-clear glass that offsets the slight tint of three panes.
  • Heavy-duty rollers. Rollers rated for the extra weight of large triple glazed panels.
  • Dual colour frame. A different powder-coat colour inside and outside to suit both the room and the elevation.

Lead times and fitting

Lead time: Typically 4–6 weeks after survey sign-off; some triple glazed units take a little longer.
Fitting: Typically 1–2 days, as heavier panels need extra hands and care.

Nothing is ordered until you confirm the surveyed specification in writing. See how it works.

Rules and approvals

England

In England, a replacement sliding door is a controlled fitting under the Building Regulations. In an existing home, a door with more than 60% glazing must reach a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better (or a Doorset Energy Rating of band C) under Approved Document L, and glass in doors must be safety glazing under Approved Document K. We arrange compliance through a competent person scheme installer or by notifying Building Control, and you receive the certificate.

Wales

In Wales, replacement doors are covered by the Building Regulations as applied in Wales, including the Welsh Part L energy requirements and safety glazing rules. Compliance is arranged through a competent person scheme installer or your council's Building Control, and the certificate is kept with your property records.

Scotland

In Scotland, replacing a door like for like in a house does not usually need a building warrant, but the new door must still meet the Scottish building standards for energy and safety. Forming or widening an opening is different: that needs a building warrant from the council before work starts.

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) apply through your district council's building control service, with energy guidance in Technical Booklet F1. Work in Northern Ireland is by arrangement, and we confirm the approval route for your property at survey.

Triple glazed sliding doors: common questions

Is triple glazing worth it on a sliding door?

Triple glazing is usually worth it where heat loss matters most: north- or east-facing doors, exposed sites, very large glass areas, low-energy homes and houses with heat pumps. It adds around 12% to a guide price. On a sheltered south-facing elevation the benefit is smaller, because double glazing lets in slightly more free winter sun.

What U-value does a triple glazed sliding door achieve?

A triple glazed thermally broken aluminium sliding door typically achieves a whole-door U-value of around 0.8–1.1 W/m²K, depending on the system, the glass coatings, the gas fill and the panel sizes. A good double glazed equivalent is typically around 1.2–1.6 W/m²K. Lower numbers mean less heat lost through the door.

How much heavier is triple glazing?

A triple glazed unit is typically a third to a half heavier than a double glazed unit of the same size, because of the extra pane of glass. On a large sliding panel that can add a significant amount of weight, which is why the frame, track and rollers must be designed and rated for it. Some systems reduce the maximum panel size.

Does triple glazing make sliding doors harder to open?

A well-designed triple glazed sliding door should still open smoothly, because the panel runs on rollers that carry the weight, but it takes slightly more effort to start a heavier panel moving. On very large panels, a lift and slide mechanism is often used instead, which raises the panel off its seals before it slides.

Why is there condensation on the outside of my triple glazing?

Condensation on the outside pane on cold, clear mornings is a sign that triple glazing is working. So little heat escapes through the unit that the outer pane can drop below the dew point of the air outside, and moisture forms on it. It clears as the day warms and does not mean anything is wrong with the door.

Do I need triple glazing to meet building regulations?

No, triple glazing is not required to meet building regulations on its own. In England, Approved Document L requires a new or replacement door in an existing home with more than 60% glazing to achieve a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better, which good double glazed systems can meet. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own energy guidance.

Does triple glazing let in less light?

Triple glazing lets in slightly less light than double glazing because the extra pane absorbs and reflects a little more, and the coatings used to reduce heat loss add a faint tint. Most people find the difference hard to see day to day. A low-iron outer pane can make the glass look clearer if that matters to you.

Can I upgrade my existing sliding door to triple glazing?

Usually not by swapping the glass alone, because a triple glazed unit is thicker and heavier than the frame and rollers of a double glazed door were designed for. In most cases moving to triple glazing means replacing the whole door with a system built to take it, which we can survey and quote for.
